I have done some online shopping and see a lot of sellers, but do not know who to choose. I would like a 72 hour kit I can buy and store at home. You can also buy a kit for the car. Can you recommend a reputable vendor and some tips I should know?

Eh! Move to somewhere that doesn’t have earthquakes?
just get a u-haul…if you live there and know it can happen…do not complain…or ask for assistance…it was “your” choice to live there…and my tax money to help you out….get a u-haul…good luck
What kind of kit are you talking about? First aid? Food? Water? Clothing and tools? Just go but things that you would need and make your own kit.It will save you a lot of money if you do it yourself and yours will be better. Being a truck driver, I always keep at least 10 days of food in my truck and a good first aid kit I made myself, also my clothes, tools and about 7 days of water in 1 gallon jugs.
I do this, because of driving all over the country, I never know what I will be driving through. Just look at the snow storms this year. I-40 was shut down for a couple of days.
If anything happens, have a drink/whatever you have, then bend forward and kiss your arse goodbye!
As far as a kit goes, you don’t really need to buy one. Just gather the following items:
-non-perishable food stuffs (enough for each person for three days)
-can opener
-flashlight
-extra batteries
-perscriptions that you (and others in your home) take on a regular basis (enough for one week)
-water (1 gallon per person per day-three days worth)
-extra change of clothes/blankets
Depending on where you live, you might consider a little hand crank radio/cell-charger/flashlight. Here’s a link to the one we have, which we’ve thankfully never had to use:
